Horror “Fixes”!

I thought you’d like to see some of the horror “fixes” I’ve had to repair over the years. Some are so bad as to make the actual “repair” dangerous, not only that, but if the repair was done properly it would have taken the ‘repairer’ less time than their elegant solutions!

Case 1. Laptop DC socket “repair”

ASUS A6R 004
ASUS A6R 004 3
ASUS A6R 004 1

See the lovely horse shoe shaped slice in this laptops motherboard... it wasn’t there when it left the factory! As you can imagine this is all kinds of BAD, as motherboards are multi layered, with wire traces going in different directions etc.

The repairer put in a nutted power socket for this Asus laptop rather than the standard power socket. The black mark is where the power socket was arcing off the motherboard, VERY luckily in this case both the laptop motherboard was not fried and somehow it didn’t catch fire!

Here’s the villain in this piece, the nutted power supply fitted to the laptop. The black mark was where the electrical arcing to the motherboard was taking place.. It was insulated by 1 thin piece of insulating tape, which had melted through..

The wire the repairer used was for use in car speaker cables... The cable run was over 30cm from the original position of the power socket. It actually would have taken LONGER to do a repair like this than if the repairer did it properly!

You know the brown packing tape for parcels? Yes, that really is some helping to keep the wire in place as it runs its course across the motherboard! Just under the cover on the left one of the motherboard spacers had actually cut a circle out of the wire, further adding to the overheating problems with the cable and socket.

The repairer charged £65 originally, but it could have cost them a new laptop because of their shoddy work! My customer took it back to the repairer because of the electrical burning smell when it was switched on, they were asking for another £95 to repair their botched job and put on thicker wire...
